First Impressions

William Robert Powers was born today!! Scott and I were up all night last night trying to sleep through the excitement (and pain) of increasingly intense contractions. For some reason, the doctor insisted that I wait until the contractions were closer together and more regular. So much for the benefit of a planned c-section! Although not a physically enjoyable experience, it was kind of fun to labor with William as though I was going to have a natural birth and I love that he chose his own time to come into this world! So, early this morning we called our friend Heather and she came right over to play with the boys. Scott and I gathered our things and went to the hospital where William was born without any complications. He is our smallest, but tallest: 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 21 inches. What a wonderful day! We were able to spend the morning getting to know William and practicing nursing. He's a pro already! Then Scott went home to tell the boys the good news of their new little brother.

Finally after a much needed nap for all of the boys, Scott included, they came to see William and me at the hospital. I loved seeing their sweet little faces as they anxiously walked into the hospital room. They were excited and nervous at the same time, not knowing exactly what to expect. They were so proud of the flowers and cards that they helped Scott pick out for me. John Stephen immediately came to my bedside to see his new brother and was very curious about him. Benjamin stayed back at first, probably knowing that his life was now going to be different!

John Stephen wanted to join William and me on the bed right away so Scott helped him climb up and snuggle in next to us. He immediately reached for William's nose and gave it a little pinch saying "Honk! Honk!" as we often do with each other. I guess that was William's initiation into the family!

Finally, Benjamin could hold back no longer and came up on the bed with us too. He held William like an old pro and was so sweet with him. This is one well loved baby brother!
